Hi there! So, we've got to a point where we'vetalked about identification ofreading difficulties, andwe've talked about some ofthe additional things that might be goingon for ... an individual with dyslexia. So, it's a natural time to ask well,... ... what are the pros andcons of actually giving a child ...this label of 'dyslexia'.We've been talking a lot about the labelof dyslexia and other labels so ifwe're going to go and actually take thatstep, what are some of the pros and cons?So Vincent, what, I mean, what would you say are some ofthe advantages you feel of actuallygiving a child the label of dyslexia?>> Well I think it's often ...a relief for ... the parents certainly, and the child very often, also to beable to put a word on somethingthey felt that something was wrong, but they couldn't name it.And so with the diagnosis with the labelof dyslexia, they feel relieved becausethey can put words on what was wrong and,and what they could not name before that.Another positive aspect I think,is that in some countries - in many countries -- in more and more countries ... the label of dyslexia allows ...... adaptations at school:extra time for the exams or ... otheradaptations which the child would benefit (from)if he or she is diagnosed, and would notbenefit if the diagnosis is not there. These are the two main aspects thatI see as positive with the labeling.>> Right, right. No, ... that's,they're very valid points.I think, as you were speaking,I was thinking of some, I mean,I think sometimes therecan be disadvantages.I think, I think sometimes whena child has kind of developed -already developed - some defensemechanisms against ...against reading and is just feelingthat they might fail if they try it.I think I've seen some cases wherea child would just say, 'well, you know, I can't do that,I've got dyslexia, don't make me do it'.So I guess you have to be careful when,in that kind of sense, or at least ifthe label is given, that that kind ofthing is not encouraged as, as a behavior.>> Mm-hm.>> I think also it can be tricky.I guess we have to be carefulthat in some school systems,I've seen that if you're given that label, you then end up with almost a kind ofpackaged intervention that is phonics. And as we've talked about that main(ly),I guess that may not always bethe best route, so I think it'sgood to know your school system andwhether the label is going toautomatically result in an intervention, where, you know,it could be that your child's older andactually that may not bethe perfect intervention. So, I guess something to think,a context to think about. And I think I mean ... lastly,as well, it's just important to I guess,to remember that labels are,in some ways kind of easy to give, butthen hard to take away. And certainly, I think it's such a,there's such a finebalance in early years.Because we obviously, sometimes, as you said, like the label is the gateway to the help. But then actually, if the child justneeded some systematic instruction, and once they have that help, the problem resolves, then they could be, kind of,you know ... stuck with a label. So it's, I think people whoare doing the diagnoses in families,it's a tough decision.I think, very often ...you have to make the individual call, andalmost do these pros and cons list in yourhead to work out whether it's going to bethe right thing for you and your family.>> Mm-hm.
