Lab 1: Managing Backup and Recovery
Exercise 1: Backing Up and Restoring Mailbox Databases

Task 1: Populate the Mailbox of Arlene
1.
On SYD-CL1, log on as
Gregory
with a password of
Pa$$w0rd
.
2.
Click
Start
and then click
E-mail
.
3.
Click
New
and then create a new message:

To: Arlene

Subject: Message before Backup

Click
Send
.
5.
Log off as Gregory.

Task 2: Back up the recovery storage group
1.
On SYD-EX2, click
Start
, point to
All Programs
, point to
Accessories
, point to
System Tools
, and then click
Backup
.
2.
Click
Next
to start the Backup or Restore wizard.
3.
If necessary, click
Back up files and settings
, and then click
Next
.
4.
Click
Let me choose what to back up
, and then click
Next
.
5.
In the
Items to back up
box, expand
Microsoft Exchange Server
, expand
SYD-
EX2
, expand
Microsoft Information Store
.

Select
First
Storage Group
, and then click

Browse
, select the root of drive

. This will create the
backup to disk as a file named Backup.bkf. The option to select tape was unavailable
because there is no tape drive in your system. Click

Verify data after backup
. This compares the backup data with disk data to
ensure that the backup was successful. The option to use hardware compression is
available only for tape backup units. The option to disable the Volume Shadow Copy
Service is unavailable because Windows Backup is unable to use Volume Shadow
Copy Service for Exchange Server backups. Click
Next
.

Select
Replace the existing backups
, and then click
Next
. In most cases, you want
to overwrite the data existing in a backup file or on a backup tape.

Task 3: Delete the existing database to simulate corruption
1.
On SYD-EX2, open the Exchange Management Console.

In the
Server Configuration
node, click
Mailbox
, and in the result pane, click
SYD-EX2
.

Right-click
Mailbox Database
, and then click
Dismount
Database
. Click
Yes
.
4.
Open Windows Explorer.
5.
Browse to and delete the file
D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\
Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb
, and then press ENTER.
6.
Close the Windows Explorer.
7.
In the Exchange Management Console, right-click
Mailbox Database
, and then click
Mount Database
.
8.
Click
No
to prevent creating a new empty store.

Task 4: Prepare the database to be restored
1.
Right-click
Mailbox Database
, and then click
Properties
.
2.
Select
This database can be overwritten by a restore
, and then click
OK
.
Note:
To restore a database, it must also be dismounted. This database has
already been dismounted.

. Notice that both the log files
and mailbox database are listed. You can restore them separately or together. In this
case, you want to restore them together.

Temporary location for log and patch files
type
C:\RestoreTemp
. Windows
Backup restores transaction logs to this temporary location to ensure that they do not
overwrite any existing transaction logs. If you are restoring incremental or
differential backups, they should also be restored to the same location.

Select the
Last Restore Set
option. This indicates that there are no additional log
files to restore. Windows Backup will start replaying the transaction log files after
this restore is complete.
8.
Select the
Mount Database After Restore
option. This will mount the database as
soon as possible after the transaction log replay is complete.
9.
Click

10.
After the restore completes, click
Close

Task 5: Verify database functionality
1.
In the Exchange Management Console, refresh the view. Notice that the database is
now mounted.
2.
Close the Exchange Management Console.
3.
On SYD-CL1, log on as
Arlene
with a password of
Pa$$w0rd
.
4.
Click
Start
and then click
E-mail
.
5.
Read the messages in Arlene’s Inbox. Notice that the message you sent before the
backup is there. Messages sent after the backup would also be recovered from the
transaction logs if they are available.
6.
Close Outlook.
Exercise 2: Restoring Data Using the Recovery Storage Group

Task 1: Remove messages
1.
On SYD-CL1, click
Start
and then click
E-mail
.
2.
Right-click
Message before Backup
and then click
Delete
.
3.
In the left pane, click
Deleted Items
.
4.
Right-click
Message before Backup
and then click
Delete
.
5.
Click
Yes
to permanently delete the message.
6.
Close Outlook.
